Certificate

A diamond certificate or diamond grading report is an evaluation of your diamond's characteristics.  Gemologists have created diamond grading laboratories to provide third party evaluations of diamonds.  Gemologists utilize modern technical tools to determine a diamond’s characteristics.  Many diamond grading laboratories utilize several independent gemologists’ evaluations of a diamond and compare them before the certificate is complete.  If there are discrepancies between the gemologists’ determinations, another gemologist or team of gemologists may be required before a common agreement can be reached concerning the quality of a diamond, and before a certificate can be issued.

We recommend that, when comparing prices for diamonds of similar qualities, you consider all the characteristics mentioned on a diamond certificate in order to make a sound decision.  This way, you can be sure that you are looking at comparable diamonds.  This also applies when you compare diamonds that were graded by different laboratories.  For example, a diamond certified by the Gemological Laboratory of America (GIA), should be compared against other diamonds certified by GIA when possible.

Sample certificates from each of the laboratories can be seen below.

Certificates are not appraisals.  An appraisal is a replacement evaluation document that determines the retail value of a diamond.  When a diamond is purchased, we recommend that you contact your insurance company and give them a copy of the appraisal so that it may be insured against loss or theft.  Each diamond purchase from Desert Brilliance includes a certificate (if noted) and an appraisal.

The following is a list and brief description of diamond characteristics that you may find on a diamond certificate.

Gemological Laboratory Name: The name of the laboratory that is issuing the diamond certificate/grading report.

Certificate Reference Number/Report Number: The diamond certificate/grading report number specific to a particular diamond.

Date: The date a diamond certificate/ grading report was completed.

Shape and Cutting Style: The description of the outline of the diamond (shape) and the pattern of the facet arrangement (cutting style). More about Color.

Weight:  The weight of a diamond given in carats.  One carat is equal to 1/5 of a gram.  In keeping with internationally recognized practice, weight is recorded to the nearest hundredth of a carat.

Color:
The color grade of a diamond or, more appropriately, the lack of color.  The color scale is given in a scale from D to Z, with D through F considered to be colorless, G through J considered to be near colorless, and lower grades showing a noticeable yellow color. More on Color.

Clarity: The clarity grade of a diamond which measures the absence of inclusions (internal flaws) and blemishes (external flaws).  More on Clarity.

Dimensions/measurements: The length, width and depth of a diamond in millimeters.

Table: The largest facet of a diamond located on what is commonly referred to as the top of the diamond.

Culet: The facet at the bottom point of a diamond.  It is preferable if the culet is not visible with the bare eye.

Crown: The top part of a diamond from the table to the girdle.

Girdle: The point where the crown meets the pavilion.  This is the widest point of a diamond.

Pavilion: The bottom part of a diamond from the girdle to the culet.

Depth: The measurement of diamond from the center point of the table to the culet, which is the point on the bottom of a diamond.

Polish: The smoothness of a diamond's surface.

Symmetry: The exactness of a diamond's outline and the shape, placement and alignment of its facets.

Fluorescence: Some diamonds contain fluorescence. It is preferred that a diamond with a color grade of D – H have the following fluorescent grades: none, faint blue, very slight blue or slight blue. Any stronger degree of fluorescence will retract from how light refracts off a diamond which will reduce its brilliance.

Cut Grade: A grade that describes how well proportioned a round brilliant cut diamond is based on the following characteristics: depth, table size, crown angle, pavilion angle, star length, lower-half (lower-girdle facet) length, girdle thickness, and culet size, as well as the diamond's polish and symmetry grades.

Inscription : Some diamonds a laser inscribed on the girdle to help identify a specific diamond.

Inclusion Plot Diagram with Key to Symbols: A plot of the location, type and size of inclusions in a diamond.
